This certifies that an ethane carrier can be retrofitted to carry liquefied natural gas without having to convert the vessel’s tanks. This is the first rating available for ethane tankers that helps to assess the levels of preparation required for LNG storage or transport.

The “LNG Cargo ready” rating supports the development of very large ethane/ natural gas carriers (VLECs) and ultra large ethane/ natural gas carriers (ULECs).

This flexibility provides a high value-added option and gives ship-owners and charterers the possibility of making the most of the freight market as it evolves, as well as facilitating its financing and increasing the vessel’s residual value.

Evolution of Ethane carrier generation

Very Large Ethane Carrier
First generation

Very Large Ethane Carrier
Second & third generation

Ultra Large Ethane Carrier
(ULEC)

Capacity: 87,000m3

Technology: GTT’s Mark III system

Boil off rate: 0,125% BOR

Liquid cargo type: Butane, Propane, LPG mix, Propylene, Ethane

Largest and fastest Ethane Carriers ever built

Capacity: 98, 000m3 (+14% vs. 1st generation)

Technology: GTT’s Mark III system

Boil off rate: 0,095% BOR (-25% vs. 1st generation)

Speed: from 16,75 to 18,3knt

Liquid cargo type: addition of Ethylene as cargo

Class notations “LNG Cargo Ready”

For third generation:

Capacity 99,000 m3

Ballast pressure at 400mbarg

Shaft generator

Capacity: 150,000 m3

Technology: GTT’s Mark III High Density

LNG option: Cargo ready or Full LNG capable

Ethane as fuel in Ethane shipping, LNG as fuel in case of LNG

Ethane is one of the components of natural gas.
